What upcoming developments are there regarding simplification, reduction, or even questioning of data protection in the European Union?

Alexandra Jaspar is the Director of the Authorization and Advisory Service at the Data Protection Authority (DPA), with over 25 years of experience in data protection, privacy, and compliance across both legal practice and leading organizations.

In her presentation, she will examine how the evolving geopolitical context is prompting European and national legislators to reconsider data protection, which is facing increasing pressure to reconcile the fundamental right to data protection with economic and political considerations.

As the ongoing trilogue between European Union institutions will be decisive in shaping the ethical and legal framework for tomorrow's data protection, many European organizations are increasingly turning to less privacy-friendly solutions, due to their reliance on foreign tech giants.

It will highlight how ethics can help address risks often overlooked by legal frameworks, go beyond traditional security principles such as confidentiality, integrity, and availability, and consider the concrete impact of privacy decisions on affected individuals, without slowing down operational implementation.

This roundtable aims to explore a question at the heart of our digital future: how to reconcile the rapid growth of artificial intelligence with data protection? Between innovation, regulatory challenges, and European ambitions, discussions will highlight current tensions as well as possible solutions for finding a sustainable balance. The objective is to consider how organizations, particularly European ones, can make this framework a true lever for technological progress, while strengthening citizens' trust.
